Recent News

Recent events of note include:-

  • The CCSBT has adopted a Management Procedure (MP) to be used to guide the setting of the southern bluefin tuna (SBT) global total allowable catch (TAC) to ensure that the SBT spawning stock biomass achieves the interim rebuilding target of 20% of the original spawning stock biomass. The CCSBT will set the TAC from 2012 and beyond based on the outcome of the MP, unless the CCSBT decides otherwise based on information that is not otherwise incorporated into the MP.
  • The global SBT TAC for 2012 and 2013 have been set at 10,449t and 10,949t respectively, which are increases over the 2009 and 2010 TACs of 9,449t.
  • The advice from the July 2011 meeting of the Extended Scientific Committee is that the SBT spawning stock biomass is very low, but that there have been several positive recent signals about the outlook for the spawning stock.
  • The CCSBT has adopted a Strategic Plan which sets out the strategic direction of the CCSBT in managing the SBT fishery, including an action plan for implementation. The CCSBT has also adopted a Compliance Plan that supports the Strategic Plan and provides a framework for the CCSBT, Members and Cooperating Non-Members to improve compliance, and over time, achieve full compliance with CCSBT’s conservation and management measures. The Compliance Plan also includes a three-year action plan to address priority compliance risks.
  • The CCSBT agreed to appointment of a full-time Compliance Manager within the CCSBT Secretariat. This position will be advertised soon.
  • The total number of fish tagged in the CCSBT tagging program is 79507, with 11197 recaptures having been reported as at October 2011. Recoveries of tags from all components of the SBT fishery are continuing.

 

REWARDS - CCSBT tagging program
